Secret Invasion #1 Revelations Reviewed

Instead of giving my opinion on every issue of Secret Invasion as they are released, I thought it would be more fun to review the revelations. In other words, is it cool that Hero A is a Skrull or does it suck that Hero B isn’t a Skrull?

By the way, this series will be the essence of the spoiler, so I’m finally making use of the “fold” option in Wordpress. If you don’t want the key plot points ruined, don’t read on.

Elektra is a Skrull!: We found out about Elektra being a Skrull what, six months ago? Not exactly a surprise here unless you’ve been living under a rock. I mean, I haven’t read hardly any new comics for the past year and even I knew about her being a Skrull. On the other hand, it would be cool it it was revealed when Elektra had been replaced by a Skrull. I’m hoping that it was when she was “resurrected” by the Hand in the “Enemy of the State” Wolverine story arc. I hope for this because it will mean that the Hand were infiltrated by Skrulls and that evil Northstar is also an impostor. Also, this will piss of a lot of Mark Millar fans. Rating: 3/10 - BORING!

Dum Dum Dugan is a Skrull!: I’ve heard that this was revealed in the Secret Invasion Prologue released on Marvel’s DCU site. I only read half of the story because DCU sucks monkey balls so SI #1 is like the reveal for me. So I’m not sure if the prologue reveals when Dugan was replaced, so I can’t speak to that and I also know very little about the character so I geuss this is kinda cool… what I do know is he blew up Agent Brand’s space ship and that scores major points in my book. Rating: 4/10 - INDIFFERENT!

Jarvis is a Skrull!: This was smart of the Skrulls (and of Marvel) do have a Skrull posing as a very, very minor character in the position to fuck up everything. This also gives an idea that the Skrulls had a hand in Civil War, or at least the outcome, positioning Iron Man so that taking him down would cripple the entire hero community. This isn’t an AWESOME reveal because it makes too much sense, but I approve from a storytelling perspective. Rating: 7/10 - GOOD!

Look who’s in the Skrull ship!: Eh… it seems that this is supposed to be the big reveal of the issue, but it comes off as very cheap. Now, if the people crawling from the Skrull ship were in fact kidnapped heroes returning from the Skrull homeworld, this would be a 10 out of 10, a reveal so insane and out of left field that it would destroy the Marvel Universe as we know it. It would be so awesome. But sadly, it’s clearly a ruse and we’re just looking at a bunch of jokester Skrulls looking to mess with the Avenger’s heads before a big brawl. I say this because of three glaring reasons: Wolverine, Hawkeye and the Scarlet Witch. While many people would like to think that “House of M” and “Avengers Disassembled” were the work of a Skrull impostor, it doesn’t make sense that I Skrull would have that level of power. She could have been replaced after “House of M,” but it wouldn’t make sense that a Skrull would pose as a depowered, amnesic hero. Hawkeye is obviously not a Skrull because, while they had the perfect chance to replace him with his death and not-so-explained return, but his return in New Avengers #26 was too emotional and character driven to have been a Skrull. And the most obvious proof is the whiskered Wolverine. By taking this form, the Skrull is suggesting that Wolverine has been replaced since his first appearance in the 1970s, before he became an X-Man. While this would be the most epic reveal, the fact that Wolverine has already been replaced by a Skrull makes it an obvious trick. That would mean that a crappy Skrull who couldn’t mimick Wolverine’s powers replaced a Skrull that could? Clearly someone didn’t get the memo. Rating: 5/10 - FUN BUT USELESS!

Hank Pym is a Skrull!: Duh. A recently solicited cover pretty much outed him as a Skrull, but his indifferent reaction to Bill Foster’s death in Civil War had him on the watch list for a long time. I don’t really care about Hank as a character but it’s neat that someone so close to the actual heavy hitters has been a Skrull for God knows how long. So, while this wasn’t a surprise, I like it for what it means for the story. Rating: 6/10 - COOL!

And there you have it. More revelation reviews as the shocks come in!

Sigh…so far the revelations are as lame as DC’s Millennium event 2 decades ago. Nobody major, and when they are revealed it turns out that they were replaced 5 minutes ago (like Dugan).
