When I first saw the Final Crisis teaser image posted on Newsarama, my immediate reaction was, “Oh god, not another one!” To say that I and legions of other fans are not sick and tired of constant mega-events is quite the understatement. The news of another Crisis immediately makes me cringe.
Then, after it sank in, I found myself thinking “Final Crisis? I certainly hope so.” With the DC Universe in a constant state of crisis since 2004’s Identity Crisis, its time we’ve had a break from everything going to hell. Remember when Batman spent most of his time beating up muggers and crime lords, not saving the entire universe from interdimensional threats? It’s time things get back to a smaller scale.
And now that I know the details: Grant Morrison will be writing, JG Jones will be the artist and the series will be limited to seven over-sized issues. That sounds awesome. Now Countdown seems relevant again, if only as a gauge to when we finally get to read a Crisis worth having.
Of course, I’m still hoping out on making any wild speculations. There was a lot of talk about Infinite Crisis changing everything, but it only served to complicate continuity. Hopefully Final Crisis will efficiently and effectively clean up things without resorting to massive changes that only seem to confuse. I have faith in Grant Morrison. Let’s get this over with.
